ROSCO Safe Driver of the Year is honoured at the UK Bus Awards
Every year, member companies of ROSCO nominate one of their top drivers for the coveted ROSCO Safe Driver of the Year Award. In additon to having driven without a blameworthy accident or prosecution for at least 30 years, the award is judged on other aspects of the driver’s abilities.
This year, the award went to Bob Pitts from Stagecoach in Barnsley and it was presented to Bob at the prestigious UK Bus Awards by Peter Shipp, Chairman of ROSCO( pictured) and CPT President Bill Hiron.
With 37 consecutive years of safe driving under his belt and the prestigious GreenRoad Fleet Elite status, Bob Pitts is amongst the safest bus drivers in the country who has been doing just that since 1978.
“I left school at 16 to work with my dad doing door-to-door bread deliveries and we had a successful franchise until a supermarket price war brought an end to it.
“Customer service was all I knew. So when a relative, who worked for Yorkshire Traction, as it was known then, said I should apply for a job as bus driver I thought it was a great idea.
Bob ,who is married with two grown up children and a 13-year-old, works early and late shifts. “Having done it for so long, everybody knew me. Passengers would stop and have a few words with me and it creates a real rapport with them which is fantastic.
“Working on different routes means meeting all sorts of people. The X19 service to Doncaster Sheffield Airport is interesting because it carries holidaymakers. I often ask where they are heading.”
Patience, reliability and being able to get up early have helped Bob to enjoy three successful decades with Stagecoach, covering hundreds of thousands of miles across South and West Yorkshire.
Bob has often been called upon to mentor trainee drivers and some, who he trained in the early 1980s, are still here now.
“Stagecoach is a great company to work for and I’ve made friends for life through my job. The camaraderie in the team is brilliant and that’s one of the reasons I’ve stayed so long”.
Bob has an exemplary blemish free work record and is very much a deserved winner. We are all extremely proud of him today.
